As we await the opportunity to return to the hockey pitch, a little dip back into the archives to recall Railway’s 2-1 extra time victory over Dublin University in the Mills Cup 90 years ago.
The 1931 Leinster Senior (Mills) Cup victory was the club’s 6th time to win the trophy and started a run of 3 cup wins in a row. Indeed 1931 saw the club win the Leinster Senior League, Leinster Senior Cup and Irish Senior Cup and was also in the middle of the club’s sequence of 11 Senior League titles in a row from 1922 to 1933.
The 2-1 win saw both of the Railway goals being scored by Irish international V Sully and the team was under the astute captaincy of Walter Chiddick (whose continues to be remembered by the club as his name remains atop the original gates at Park Avenue)
Courtesy of the Irish Times, the article from 1931 is attached here as well as the one minute long British Pathe newsreel showing the action from the day
Continue to keep safe and healthy.
